It combines two of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters on the planet: tracking golden monkeys through the bamboo forests of Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, and trekking mountain gorillas across the border in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park — all in a single short, well-paced trip beginning and ending in Kigali.

The golden monkey is one of Africa’s most visually striking and least-known primates, found only in the Virunga Mountains shared between Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its jet-black coat offset by vivid patches of golden-orange makes for an unforgettable morning of tracking through low-altitude bamboo forest — a noticeably easier trek than gorilla trekking, and a wonderful warm-up for what follows. From Volcanoes National Park, the trip crosses into Uganda for the main event: a trek into the misty rainforest of Bwindi, home to more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, to spend a profound hour in the presence of a wild gorilla family.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Your Kenlink Tours guide will meet you on arrival in Kigali and transfer you north to Musanze, the base town for Volcanoes National Park, through Rwanda’s rolling hills, vibrant villages, and cultivated landscapes. Check into your lodge in the late afternoon and rest ahead of tomorrow’s trek. Overnight: Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge or similar, near Volcanoes National Park

Day 2: Golden Monkey Trekking & Transfer to Bwindi, Uganda

After breakfast, head to the Volcanoes National Park offices for a briefing before setting off on a relatively easy trek through the lower-altitude bamboo forests of the Virunga volcanoes. Golden monkeys live in large, playful troops and, unlike gorillas, are quite comfortable with flash photography, making for an especially lively and photogenic encounter. Once you’ve spent your hour with them, begin the transfer across the Cyanika border into Uganda, continuing on to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park — home to more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas — arriving in the evening. Day 3: Mountain Gorilla Trekking Experience

The heart of this safari. After a briefing at the park headquarters, trek into the forest with experienced rangers in search of a habituated gorilla family. Once located, you’ll spend a full hour in their presence — an experience most travelers describe as one of the most moving of their lives. In the afternoon, consider an optional visit to a nearby Batwa community, the original forest-dwelling people of this region, for a very different but equally memorable cultural encounter. Day 4: Transfer Back to Kigali & Departure

Begin the scenic drive back across the border to Kigali, arriving in time for your onward travel or flight home — the end of a fast-paced but unforgettable four days spanning two countries and two of Africa’s rarest primates.

Good to Know

Permits: Golden monkey trekking permits are issued by the Rwanda Development Board, while Uganda’s gorilla trekking permit — currently USD 800 per person — is issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Both are limited daily and should be secured well ahead of your travel dates; we handle both as part of your booking.

Visas for a combined trip: Since this itinerary crosses both countries, we generally recommend the East African Tourist Visa, valid for Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya. Uganda’s visa can also be applied for individually through the Uganda e-Visa portal, and Rwanda’s through the Rwanda Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration.

Best time to go: This trip can be done year-round, but the dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer the best trekking conditions for both golden monkeys and gorillas, with firmer trails and easier visibility.

Fitness and age requirements: Golden monkey trekking is a relatively easy trek through lower-altitude bamboo forest, while gorilla trekking is more demanding, involving uneven, sometimes steep and muddy terrain. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended, and the minimum age for this tour is 16.

Entry requirements: Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required for entry into both Rwanda and Uganda.
