What Are Golden Monkeys?

Golden monkeys (Cercopithecus mitis kandti) are a subspecies of the blue monkey and are endemic to the Virunga Volcanic region shared by Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. What sets them apart is their striking appearance — a vivid coat of golden-orange fur across their backs and flanks, contrasting sharply with black limbs and faces. According to the IUCN Red List, golden monkeys are classified as Endangered, with an estimated population of only 3,000 to 5,000 individuals remaining in the wild.

These social primates live in large troops of up to 100 individuals, led by a dominant alpha male. They are energetic, curious, and endlessly entertaining — leaping between bamboo trees, foraging for shoots, fruits, and small insects, and engaging in playful social interactions. Where Can You Trek Golden Monkeys?

Golden monkeys can only be found in a handful of protected areas in East and Central Africa. For tourism purposes, the two best destinations are Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda — both of which are part of our primate safari packages.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda

Nestled in the Kisoro District of south-western Uganda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda’s smallest national park, covering just 33.7 km², yet it punches well above its weight in terms of wildlife. It is the only place in Uganda where you can trek golden monkeys, and it also harbours endangered mountain gorillas — making it the perfect destination for a combined gorilla and golden monkey safari.

How Does a Golden Monkey Trek Work?

Whether you trek in Uganda or Rwanda, the experience follows a well-organised structure designed to ensure both visitor enjoyment and monkey welfare.

Trekkers arrive at park headquarters by 7:00–7:30 AM for a morning briefing led by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) rangers in Uganda, or Rwanda Development Board (RDB) rangers in Rwanda. During the briefing, you are given key guidelines — including maintaining a minimum distance of 7 metres from the monkeys, wearing a face mask to limit disease transmission, and avoiding feeding or touching the animals.

After the briefing, you set off along forest trails with armed ranger guides and experienced trackers. The trek to locate the monkeys can range from 30 minutes to five hours depending on how far the troop has moved. Once found, you are granted one hour in the company of the golden monkeys — enough time for plenty of photographs and magical close-up observation. The entire experience, including the hike back, typically concludes by midday, leaving your afternoon free for other wildlife safaris or cultural activities.

During the rainy seasons (March–May and October–November), trails can become muddy and slippery, though the lush green forest scenery is spectacular.
